Structures of Dwarf Satellites of Milky Way-like Galaxies: Morphology, Scaling Relations, and Intrinsic Shapes

چکیده

The structure of a dwarf galaxy is an important probe into the effects stellar feedback and environment. Using unprecedented sample 223 low-mass satellites from ongoing Exploration Local VolumE Satellites (ELVES) Survey, we explore structures in mass range $10^{5.5}<M_\star<10^{8.5}$M$_\odot$. We survey around $80\%$ massive, $M_K<-22.4$ mag, hosts Volume. Our complete to luminosities $M_V<-9$ mag surface brightness $\mu_{0,V}<26.5$ arcsec$^{-2}$ within at least $\sim200$ projected kpc. separate late- early-type, finding mass-size relations are very similar between them, $\sim5\%$. This similarity indicates that quenching transformation late-type early-type involves only mild size evolution. Considering distribution apparent ellipticities, infer intrinsic shapes early- samples. Combining with literature samples, find both types dwarfs get thicker fainter but early-types always rounder fixed luminosity. Finally, compare LV samples cores Virgo Fornax clusters. cluster show scaling roughly $10\%$ larger mass, which interpret as being due tidal heating environments. results presented here useful reference for simulations formation irregulars spheroidals.

Dust Formation in Milky Way-like Galaxies

We introduce a dust model for cosmological simulations implemented in the movingmesh code arepo and present a suite of cosmological hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations to study dust formation within galactic haloes. Our model accounts for the stellar production of dust, accretion of gas-phase metals onto existing grains, destruction of dust through local supernova activity, and dust driven by wi...

Feedback and the scaling relations of dwarf/LSB galaxies

We study the role of feedback in establishing the scaling relations of low surface brightness (LSB) or dwarf galaxies, as measured from the SDSS and in the Local Group. The galaxies with stellar masses in the broad range 6 × 10 6 M∗ 6 3 × 10M⊙ show tight correlations of internal velocity, metallicity and surface brightness (or radius) with stellar mass. These define a “fundamental line” which d...

Statistics of Satellite Galaxies around Milky Way-like Hosts

We calculate the probability that a Milky-Way-like halo in the standard cosmological model has the observed number of Magellanic Clouds (MCs). The statistics of the number of MCs in the ΛCDM model are in good agreement with observations of a large sample of SDSS galaxies. Under the sub-halo abundance matching assumption of a relationship with small scatter between galaxy r-band luminosities and...

Satellites and Halos of Dwarf Galaxies

We study the abundance of satellite galaxies as a function of primary stellar mass using the SDSS/DR7 spectroscopic catalogue. In contrast with previous studies, which focussed mainly on bright primaries, our central galaxies span a wide range of stellar mass, 10 6 M ∗ /M⊙ 6 10 , from dwarfs to central cluster galaxies. Our analysis confirms that the average number of satellites around bright p...

Dark Matter Subhalos and the Dwarf Satellites of the Milky Way

The Via Lactea simulation of the cold dark matter halo of the Milky Way predicts the existence of many thousands of bound subhalos with masses above a few ×106 M⊙, distributed approximately with equal mass per decade of mass. Here we show that: a) a similar steeply rising subhalo mass function is also present at redshift z = 0.5 in an elliptical-sized halo simulated with comparable resolution i...
